Some 665 million chickens will go wingless to the giant coop in the sky just to feed Americans' appetites during the upcoming Super Bowl, according to association figures.
The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons will face off in Super Bowl LI on Feb. 5. Millions of Americans will watch the game, and those viewers are projected to consume 1.33 billion chicken wings during Super Bowl weekend, the National Chicken Council said in a statement.
To put the figure in perspective, 1.33 billion chicken wings laid end to end would circle the Earth three times, NCC said. An NFL player would need more than 1,265 years to eat all the wings if he ate an average of two per minute.
Chicken wing sales are traditionally higher in the Northeastern U.S., where the Patriots are located, than in the South.
"Although we typically like to stick together with 'feathered' teams, we'll keep our projections to wing consumption and not the Super Bowl winner," said Tom Super, NCC senior vice president of communications. "With two pretty dominant wing-hungry regions in the game, this year's Super Bowl should be great for both football and chicken wing fans." https://yhoo.it/2jtEbKe
American football fans are expected to spend big as well. The National Retail Federation projects consumers will a total of $14.1 billion on the game, or an average of $75 per person. More than 188 million people are expected to watch the Super Bowl.
"With the holidays past us, consumers are looking forward to spending time with friends and family for some good old-fashioned fun to celebrate the big game," NRF CEO Matthew Shay said. "Retailers will help fans prepare by making sure they are well stocked on decorations, party food, accessories and other Super Bowl necessities."
Most of the money will be spent on food and beverages. However, consumers will also spend on team apparel, decorations and new televisions. http://bit.ly/2k7BuPA
